Come on home…

In just 2 weeks for the first time in 7 years, our troops will finally be heading out of Iraq leaving behind nearly a decade of a War that at the time seemed right, and in retrospect proved to be a giant mistake. By the end of the draw down will we keep 50,000 troops in Iraq to stabilize what is going on on the ground, which is the normal rate after we leave a country. Over 100,000 combat troops will be leaving and finally coming back home, to their families, friends and a life that many crossed their fingers would come. The combat mission will be over, however the criticism won’t be ending anytime soon. Conservatives are up in arms about leaving Iraq, they want us to stay, and continue to waste money and put our troops lives at risk each day because they want this war, that was started by George Bush, to look like a good thing. In reality, that argument is ridiculous. The reason we went into this war is because Bush stated that Iraq had “Weapons of Mass Destruction”. Of course in the end it turned out there was never any weapons and the obvious reason for going into the war was to finish the job his father started by capturing Saddam Hussein and to topple the country and take its oil. Now 7 years later, Saddam is gone, we don’t have their oil and now the mess that we created we are spending billions of dollars to clean up, rebuild and attempt to create a new government. Some of the people want us there, some don’t. In the end, it is clear that we are leaving, and leaving after years of uncertainty and with wonders of why we were there in the first place. I know people who served there, and my thanks go out to them for giving their life for our country even if they didn’t agree with the reasoning of the war. Hopefully in a year from now I will be typing up another article, but this time about leaving Afghanistan.
